ABSTRACT

Novel drug delivery system overcomes the physiological problems of gastric retention by decreasing fluctuations in blood drug concentration with consequent reduction in undesirable toxicity and poor efficiency. Approaches have been introduced to prolong gastric residence time such as floating system, modified shape, swelling, expanding system and high density system. Bilayer floating drug delivery system is combined principle of bilayer tablet as well as floating mechanism. Bilayer floating tablet is new era for the successful development of controlled release formulation along with various features to provide a way of successful drug delivery system. The purpose of this paper is to review the principle of floating drug delivery system, current technology used in the development of same as well as summarizes the applications, advantages and disadvantages, characterization, evaluation methods and future potential for bilayer floating tablets.

Keywords: Bilayer Floating Drug Delivery Systems, Controlled Release, Gastro retentive Dosage Forms, Immediate Release Layer, Hydrodynamically balanced systems.
