ABSTRACT
Ethanopharmacological Relevance: Premna integrifolia Linn. (Verbenaceae) is traditionally used to treat inflammation. The roots of Premna integrifolia are having potential in the development of drug for inflammation due to their antiinflammatory activity. Aim of study: To evaluate the anti inflammatory and analgesic activities of different extracts of roots of Premna integrifolia Linn. (Verbenaceae). Materials and Method: Both activities were performed using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and ethanolic extracts (200mg/kg/bw and 400mg/kg/bw) of plant. Analgesic activity was performed using acetic acid induced writing in mice, eddy’s hot plate
method and tail immersion method. Anti inflammatory activity was performed using carragenan induced paw edema in rats. Results: The result of analgesic activity reveal that ethanolic and ethyl acetate extract show significant analgesic effect and maximum anti inflammatory effect was produced by ethanolic extract. The maximum inhibitory effect (60.00%) was shown by EtOH extract (400 mg/kg) at 2 hr. The results revealed that Premna integrifolia possesses significant analgesic and anti inflammatory activity. Conclusion: The results suggest that Premna integrifolia has analgesic and anti inflammatory activity thereby justifying its traditional claim.
Keywords: Premna integrifolia, Anti inflammatory activity, Analgesic activity.
