CLINICO-DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE OF DENGUE FEVER IN A SOUTH INDIAN TERTIARY CARE TEACHING HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
India is among the countries reporting regular outbreaks of Dengue infections. The present study describes clinical & demographic details of Dengue infection changes from time to time. A prospective observational study was conducted in Department of Pediatrics of SVRRGG Hospital, Tirupathi from June 2015-September 2015.Children admitted at pediatric ward in the age group of 0-16 years of both gender presenting with febrile illness of 2 to 7 days along with clinical features. During the study period 146 children were admitted to the hospital. Among them 78 female and 68 were male. 57 children were found between the age group of 6-10 years, 47 in between 1-5 years, 21 in between < 1 years, 19 in between 11-15 years and 2 were in between > 15 years. Regarding social back ground of
the Children, 109 cases were reported from rural area and 25 cases were reported from urban area. Out of 146 children, 124 were from Hindu, 19 were from Muslim, and 3 were from Christian Community. The most prevalent symptoms of dengue were fever and vomiting was elicited in 100% of cases. The next symptom was rash. Of 146 more commonly diagnosed 71 patients with NS1 antigen and 75 cases IgM. There is no specific treatment for dengue as of now. Appropriate confirmation of diagnosis, early institution of therapy, public awareness and control of vector are important factors to be taken into consideration in order to formula policies on dengue prevention and management.
