ABSTRACT

Seaweeds are rich in bioactive compounds like sulfated polysaccharides, phlorotannins and diterpenes which are benefit for both human and animal health applications. Turbinaria ornata , the spiny leaf seaweed has been studied for its antioxidant, antiulcer, wound healing and hepatoprotective activities. They are also the key raw materials in the production of algin used widely in manufacturing industries like textiles, food, medicine, etc. In the present study, preliminary phytochemical analysis of Turbinaria ornata methanolic extract (TOME) have been demonstrated. We also investigated the DPPH radical scavenging activity, anti-hemolysis and anti-inflammatory activities of Turbinaria ornata in RBC model of blood collected from healthy volunteers of 22-25 years age. The results of the present study proved that Turbinaria ornate is rich in bioactive compounds and possess appreciable free radical scavenging activity and also prevents hemolysis. The anti-inflammatory activity of Turbinaria ornata is revealed by its activity on RBC membrane stabilization compared to standard (Dichlofenac).

Keywords: Turbinaria ornata, DPPH, antihemolysis, bioactive compounds.
