ABSTRACT
Putranjiva roxburghii Wall. is a traditional medicinal plant of family Euphorbiaceae. The plant has been much used for various diseases. The present study focuses on the preliminary phytochemical profile and antibacterial activity of leaves of P. roxburghii. The preliminary phytochemical screening showed the presence of Alkoloids, Flavonoids, Carbohydrates, Glycosides, Steroids, Phenols, Tannis, Saponins, Terpenoids , coumarins and fixed oil (Table 1). From the results that, it is evident acetone, ethanol and methanolic leaf extracts have maximum inhibition zone against most of the pathogenic bacterial strains Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Vibrio cholerae except aqueous leaf extract (Table 2, Fig. 1 and Fig. 2). The Streptomycin was
used as positive control.
