ABSTRACT
Patient Counselling is needed for better patient compliance, medication adherence and achieving therapeutic outcomes. Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) course is still in infant stage in India. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of patient counselling that will persist in patients and the impact of patient counselling done by Pharm D students. In this method, a set of self designed questionnaire was prepared to evaluate the knowledge of patients regarding their disease, medications and lifestyle. Measurement of correctness of the questionnaire was analysed before counselling, on the same day of counselling, followed by 3 follow ups at day 1, day 2 and day 3 after counselling. Significant improvement (p=0.001) was noted after counselling. However, the effect of patient counselling had significant decrease (p=0.001) in patients on 3rd day after counselling as compared
tothe same day of counselling. The result of this study shows the Pharm D student’s counselling had a positive impact. On the other hand there is a gradual decrease in the effect of patient counselling done by Pharm D students after 3rd day after counselling and regular counselling is required for better patient compliance and management of patients medical conditions.
