PREVALENCE OF HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS INFECTION ALONG WITH PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS IN FENTALE DISTRICT, OROMIA REGIONAL STATE, ETHIOPIA

ABSTRACT
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the biggest challenging disease in the global community. Currently, over 40 million people are living with HIV. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of HIV and to assess the magnitude of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) co-infection among the patients at Voluntary Counseling and Testing center (VCT) Merti Hospital, Fentale District, Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was carried out between July, 2014 and August, 2015. A total of 390 young and adult (≥ 10 years) were participated. According to the national guideline HIV/AIDS Program Control
Office, all participants were tested for HIV-1 and HIV-2. Among them 12 were found to be HIV-1 positive. There were no HIV-2 positive participants. Out of 12 HIV-1 positive individuals, 5 participants were found to be PTB co-infected.
