ACUTE TOXICITY STUDIES AND DETERMINATION OF LD 50 FOR C.PAPAYA IN SWISS ALBINO MICE
J.K. Lalla* and Sunita Ogale
ABSTRACT
In this study we have investigated the potential role of Carica papaya leaf aq. extract on haematological and biochemical parameters and toxicological changes in a murine model. Albino mice were used for the trial. General behaviour, clinical signs were recorded. Blood and tissue samples were collected at intervals. Haematological parameters including platelet, red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC) counts, serum biochemistry including serum creatinine, serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) were determined. Organs for possible histopathological changes were examined. We have conducted the
study as per the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals (No. 425-up and down procedure for “Acute Oral Toxicity – Fixed Dose Method" (Adopted: 17th December 2001).
Keywords: Carica papaya, haematological, histopathological.
