Abstract

DRUG UTILIZATION EVALUATION OF ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS IN PATIENTS WITH RENAL FAILURE.

Elahe Elhami*

ABSTRACT

Patient with renal failure has weak kidneys that lead to hemodynamic overload, as well as metabolic abnormalities that adversely affect the cardiovascular system. This increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients by 10-30 times compared with subjects without CKD. Antihypertensive drugs are recommended for CKD patients with or without hypertension because these agents offer cardioprotective benefits. Objective: To determine the drug utilization evaluation of antihypertensive drugs in patients with renal failure in a department of Nephrology, KIM’s hospital, Bangalore. Method: Retrospective observational study was conducted from March 2009 to August 2015 in 105 renal failure patient admitted to the department of Nephrology at KIMS hospital, Bangalore. Information from the case sheets was retrieved into a well-designed data collection form from renal failure patients. Results: Out of 105 renal failure patients, 65(61.9%) were male and 40(38.09%) were females with mean age of 53.47±11.4 years. In the enrolled patients, we found that 55(52.38%) of them were on two drug therapy and 45(42.85%) of the patients were on three-drug therapy, while only 5(4.75%) of the patients were on monotherapy. The most common drug prescribed was a diuretic followed by alpha adrenergic blocker. About 30.4% of the prescribed drugs were from Essential Drug List (EDL) 2015. In our study, only 32% patients were prescribed generic names. Conclusion: About 16% of the patients have been prescribed with ACEI’s in accordance with the National Kidney Foundation/ Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (NKF/KDOQI) guideline. Two drug therapies were prescribed in 42.85% of the population, which abides with the guideline
