Abstract

EVALUATION OF ANTIHYPERGLYCEMIC ACTIVITY OF A POLYHERBAL FORMULATION DIABETO-VLC

S. M. Shatil Shahriar and Mohammed Rahmatullah*

ABSTRACT

Diabetes is rapidly becoming endemic throughout the world. The disease, which is manifested by high blood glucose levels increasingly leads to other complications, and can be fatal. Allopathic medicine cannot cure this disease. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity of a polyherbal formulation, Diabeto-VLC. Methods. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was used to determine antihyperglycemic activity of Diabeto-VLC, which consisted of methanol extract of seeds of Vigna radiata, Lens culinaris, and Cuminum cyminum in 1:1:1 (w/w/w) ratio. Results. Administration of Diabeto-VLC led to dose-dependent reductions in blood glucose levels in glucose-loaded mice. At doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg per kg body weight, the extract reduced blood glucose levels by 33.1, 38.9, and 42.4%, respectively compared to control animals. By comparison, a standard antihyperglycemic drug, glibenclamide, when administered at a dose of 10 mg per kg body weight, reduced blood glucose level by 47.1%. Conclusion. The results suggest that Diabeto-VLC can be used as a potential drug to reduce blood glucose levels in diabetic patients.
