Abstract

QUANTIFICATION OF ENROFLOXACIN RESIDUES IN MILK SAMPLE USING RP-HPLC

Baisakhi Moharana*, P. KarthickVenkatesh, S.P.Preetha, S.Selvasubramanian

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Residues plays bad when there is question of resistance of antibiotics in farm animals and their products. A plethora of resistance cases has been demonstrated in farm conditions making the veterinary practice vulnerable. Hence an attempt was made to analyse "Enrofloxacin - the most rampantly used drug in Veterinary practice" in cow-milk samples obtained from local areas of Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. Materials and Methods: About 125 numbers of milk samples were collected and prepared for quantitative analysis using reverse phase HPLC with orthophosphoric acid, acetonitrile and methanol as mobile phase. Result: In this study the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.1μg/ml (100 PPB) and limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.05μg/ml (50 PPB). After analysis it was found that only 16.8% of the total samples were positive for enrofloxacin among which 8% of the samples had values above the maximum residue limit (MRL) level. Conclusion: This study is clearly suggestive of the negligence exhibited by some farmers who had not carefully followed the period of withdrawal. Further, it is the duty of the Veterinarian to extend awareness and to educate the farmers regarding the residual problems.
