Abstract

IMPACT OF NUTRITION EDUCATION ON UTILIZATION OF UNDERUTILIZED VEGETABLE CROPS IN RURAL AREAS OF ALLAHABAD

ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out with the objectives to prepare the nutrition education material for intervention among rural women and to assess the impact of nutrition education on nutritional knowledge of selected rural women. Four villages namely Dabhaon and Bagbana from Chaka block and Budanva and Khatangia from Jasara block were purposively selected for the study. The total 160 rural women were selected from Chaka and Jasra block, Allahabad between the age group of 25-40 years. Purposive sampling techniques were used for the selection of the respondents. The data was collected through a developed questionnaire based on nutritional knowledge of the respondents regarding the identification and utilization of underutilized green leafy vegetables for pre exposure data and post exposure data collection. Nutrition education was given by using the prepared nutrition education tools through Posters, by making regular visits once a week for a period of 30 days. After education post exposure data were taken separately. The data obtained was tabulated and analysed with the help of statistical techniques, frequency, percentage, mean score and Z test. The nutrition education have found significant impact on knowledge related to nutritional importance, utilization of underutilized green leafy vegetables among selected rural women. Before imparting nutrition education 58.75 percent people were able to identify underutilized green leafy vegetables and 51.25 percent people were consume it. While after imparting nutrition education 96.87 percent respondents were able to identify underutilized green leafy vegetables and 83.12 percent respondents were started to consume underutilized green leafy vegetables in their daily life. A significant impact in overall knowledge (35.9 %) regarding utilization of underutilized green leafy vegetables was seen in selected rural women.
