ABSTRACT
The protective effect of methanolic extract of Lantana camara L. leaves (LCME) was evaluated at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg against 1,2–dimethyl hydrazine (DMH) induced colon cancer in rat model. Animals were divided into six groups (n=10), i.e. Normal Control, DMH (20mg/kg), DMH + LCME (200 mg/kg), DMH + LCME (400mg/kg), LCME (200mg/kg) and LCME (400mg/kg). The total experimental duration was 16 weeks where DMH was administered 20mg/Kg s.c. once in a week for 4 weeks, LCME was administered at 200 and 400 mg/kg p.o.daily for 16 weeks to the respective group animals. Body weights of all the animals were checked weekly. On the last day of experiment, blood was withdrawn from all the animals and differential cell count was estimated. Serum liver function parameters,
diagnostic and therapeutic markers of colon cancer; and lipid profile parameters were determined by using standard procedures. In comparison with DMH (20mg/kg) group animals, DMH + LCME (200 mg/kg) and DMH + LCME (400mg/kg) animals showed significant changes in all parameters. There were no adverse effects observed with LCME at any dose. Although LCME showed protective effects at both doses, but dose of 400mg/Kg showed higher protective effect. Protective effect of LCME may be attributed to its anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, immunomodulaotry, antihyperlipidemic and anti-hypercholesteromic effects which were reported previously.
