Abstract

SIMULTANEOUS ESTIMATION OF CEFIXIME TRIHYDRATE AND CLAVULANIC ACID IN BULK AND IN TABLETS BY UV-SPECTROPHOTOMETRY.

Trupti Patil*

ABSTRACT

A simple UV spectrophotometric method has been developed for the simultaneous estimation of cefixime trihydrate (CEF) and clavulanic acid(CLV) in bulk and tablets. This method was based on the application of Vierodt’s method which involves the formation and solving of simultaneous equations at 297nm and 271 nm, as absorbance maxima of CEF and CLV respectively. The Calibration curves were linear with correlation coefficient of 0.999 and 0.993 over the concentration range of 4-20 μg/mL and 2.5-12.5 μg/mL for CEF and CLV respectively. The mean percent recovery was found to be 99.79±1.57 and 100.29±0.84 for CEF and CLV respectively. The method is validated according to ICH guidelines. From data generated in this method it was revealed that the method is precise, accurate and sensitive. Literature review reveals that a there is no suitable UV-spectrophotometric method for determination of this combined dosage form. This simple UV method is followed to determine the % purity of the combined dosage form. In this method the analysis of the components were done without prior separation and without interference of excipients. The developed method was successfully applied for routine laboratory analysis of drugs.

Keywords: cefixime trihydrate (CEF), clavulanic acid(CLV) and Vierodt’s.
