ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research was to develop the taste-masked microspheres of bitter drug oseltamivir phosphate by spray-drying technique. The bitter taste threshold value of oseltamivir phosphate was determined. The Eudragit EPO was used for microsphere formation. The microspheres were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Differential scanning calorimetry, drug loading, in vitro bitter taste evaluation, and drug-release properties. The Eudragit microspheres depicted taste masking at 1:1drug–polymer ratio. The drug release was about 81.02% in 0.1N HCL within 45 min.Oral taste masked suspension was prepared using xanthum gum andwas evaluated with respect to parameters such as colour, pH,viscosity, sedimentation volume, redispersibility, drug release and stability. Taste masked suspension showed easy redispersibility and 80.92% of the drug release within 45 minutes at pH 1.2. Thus, results conclusively demonstrated successful taste masking andformulation of suspension with taste masked drug especially forpediatric, geriatric, bedridden, and non-cooperative patients.

Keywords: Taste masking, oseltamivir phosphate, Eudragit EPO, spray drying.
