Abstract

ACTIVITY OF INDIGENOUSLY KNOWN ANGIOSPERMIC PLANTS AGAINST COMMON GI PARASITES OF LIVESTOCK

ABSTRACT

Parasites are important pathogens of livestock and poultry. They affect the animals by different ways. Greater part of cattle‟s population suffers from worm infections.[1] Due to poor management practices and inadequate control measures this disease is especially prevalent in developing countries.[2] Parasitic infections lead to the acute as well as chronic illness among the human beings as well as cattle‟s inflicting a heavy production loss in livestock production throughout the tropics. Synthetic drugs are mainly used by farmers for control of gastrointestinal parasites which led to an increasing dependence on anthelmintics. Some commonly used synthetic drugs with their mechanism of action and side effects are reported in this article. The incorrect dosing, widespread use and increased frequency of treatment lead to the development of anthelmintic resistance. Hence there is a need for development and discovery of new substances that were derived from plants having anti-helmintic properties. This paper reports the few commonly used angiospermic plants with their effective parts known for anthelmintic activity.
