ABSTRACT
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the naturally occurring Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) concerning with the preformulation studies and UV spectrophotometrically. The physicochemical properties of the drug were identified as appearance (pale yellow crystalline powder), color (yellow), odor (odorless), melting point (49.5oC), taste (tasteless). The liquid samples were prepared for the scanning of CoQ10 in ethanol, methanol and 0.1 N HCl. The λmax value of drug reported in all the medium was 275 nm. The preformulation study started with loss on drying, bulk density, tapped density, angle of repose, powder compressibility (Carr’s index and Hausner’s ratio) and their values obtained were 0.5 %, 0.23 g/cc, 0.347 g/cc, 28o, 33.7 and 1.51. The partition coefficient was determined by using shake flask method log P ~ 3.21 value indicated hydrophobic nature of drug. Stock solution was prepared and different dilutions were made and absorbance was taken. The calibration curve of drug between absorbance vs. concentration has drawn to show the linearity. Therefore, the aforementioned parameters could be beneficial in providing the formulation aspect of drug.
Keywords: CoQ10, angle of repose, tapped density, calibration curve, Carr’s index, Hausner’s index.
