ABSTRACT
Aim: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of mouthrinse containing Indian propolis in inhibition of plaque formation and improvement of gingival health. Material and methods: A total of 30 patients were randomly allocated into three treatment groups: Group A: 30% ethenolic extract of Indian propolis mouthrinse, Group B: 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthrinse, and Group C: Saline. Plaque and gingival indices were used to record the degree of plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation. The baseline scores and scores after five days interval were recorded. Results: For plaque; a highest mean score was observed in saline group (2.90) which is followed by chlorhexidine mouthrinse group (1.70) and Indian propolis mouthrinse group (1.50). Similarly, a highest mean gingival score was observed in saline group (1.79) which is followed by chlorhexidine mouthrinse group (1.31) and Indian propolis mouthrinse group (1.13). The difference in the mean plaque and gingival scores after five days among the three groups was statistically significant. Conclusion: mouthrinse containing Indian propolis was the most effective among all three treatment groups followed by chlorhexidine mouthrinse.
