ROLE OF PHYTOESTROGENS IN POSTMENOPAUSAL OSTEOPOROSIS: A REVIEW
Salma Mirza and Azizur Rahman*
ABSTRACT
Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring plant compounds that are similar in some ways to estradiol, the most potent naturally occurring estrogen. Isoflavones are phyto-estrogens similar to women's estrogens and are bound to cellular estrogen receptors in various organs. Osteoporosis is a serious problem for postmenopausal women which increases the risk of bone fracture and worsens with age .Compounds with estrogen-like biological activity similar to "Isoflavones" present in plants, may reduce bone loss in postmenopausal women as they are similar in structure to estrogens.
