MEDICINAL PLANTS USED BY A FOLK HERBALIST

ABSTRACT
Background. Folk herbalists in Bangladesh use medicinal plants for treatment of diverse ailments. Evidences suggest that their knowledge of medicinal plants for treatment of diseases can be considerable. It was of interest to document the medicinal plant used by a folk herbalist in Baufol in Patuakhali district, Bangladesh. Methods. Interview of the herbalist was carried out with the help of a semi-structured questionnaire and the guided field-walk method. Results. The herbalist used a total of 30 plants distributed into 22 families for treatment. The various diseases treated included common ailments like gastrointestinal disorders as well as complex diseases like diabetes and cancer. Conclusion. The medicinal plant knowledge of folk herbalists of Bangladesh can be of possible use in treatment of various diseases and discovery of novel drugs.
