EVALUATION OF GELLING AGENTS FOR CLINDAMYCIN PHOSPHATE GEL

ABSTRACT
The objective of the present work was to formulate an anti-acne gel for the topical delivery of clindamycin phosphate. Topical application of drug offers potential advantages of local delivery of drug to the site of action and prolonged action. Gels, in recent years have gained importance because of their better absorption potential than creams and ointment bases therefore, various gelling agents like Carbopol 934, HPMC k4m, methyl cellulose, carboxy methyl xyloglucan, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose are being evaluated for their gelling potential. The pH of gel formulations was found to be in the range 5.4-7.2 which is acceptable for skin preparations.The in vitro drug release results showed that F1 formulation with 1% carbopol 934 exhibited the highest drug release rate 76.53±1.83 at the end of 6h study among the
gels. The cumulative amount of drug permeated through the rat skin was the highest for F1 (1569.543±111) with increased permeation rate of 52.572±1.25 at the end of 6h study as compared to other gels. The drug release profile from F1 was better than the commercial Clindamycin phosphate gel. The stability studies showed that there were no significant changes in the pH, drug content and drug release of the gels.
