ABSTRACT
The aim of the present study was to (i) evaluate the predictive value of serum CA-125 in women with threatened abortions. (ii) to assess the value of maternal serum CA-125 levels in predicting the pregnancy outcome in patients with threatened abortion. The study design is a prospective study from November 2010 – July 2012. The study populations includes 23 pregnant women with threatened abortion as cases and 27 pregnant women with normal singleton pregnancy as controls. The cases were subdivided into threatened abortion (12) and threatened ongoing (11). CA-125 levels estimated by ECLIA. CA-125 more than 125 U/ml as taken as the cutoff value out of the 12 patients in the threatened aborted group, 4 patients (33.33%) had serum CA-125 levels > 125 U/ml. In the threatened ongoing group who continued their pregnancy all except one (90%) had serum CA-125 levels < 125
U/ml. Out of 27 patients forming the controls, all had serum CA-125 levels < 125 U/ml. Thus the difference in the maternal serum levels of CA-125 between the viable and the non-variable pregnancies were found to be highly significant statistically (P=0.006). Present study shows a distinct elevation of CA-125 levels in pregnancies destined to be lost. Thus CA-125 levels estimation is a good tool in first trimister threatened abortions.
