Abstract

ESTIMATION AND OPTIMISATION OF RECOVERY OF SOLVENT AND EXTRACTION OF TANNIC ACID FROM DRIED HUSK OF PLANTAGO OVATA.

Harsharan Pal Singh* and Ishpreet Kaur

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to find the optimum conditions in which there is minimum solvent concentration in the dried sample, maximum recovery of the original solvent and the concentration of tannic acid in extraction of P.ovata. During the processing, psyllium husk was mixed with various solvents i.e. acetic acid, methanol and butan-1-ol. The sample of psyllium husk was mixed with the solvents of varying volumes and the vortex time was fixed at 10 min and 20 min. Then filtration was performed for the separation of solid and liquid components. The solid components were weighed, dried and finally titrated to determine the concentration of solvent in the processed sample followed by distillation of liquid samples for recovery of pure solvent. At the end, the tannin content in the processed sample was estimated. The solvents used for processing were acetic acid, methanol and butan-1-ol. It was found that the concentration for all the solvents had a common trend which was as following: Concentration of tannin for 20 ml solvents processed for 20 min > Concentration of tannin for 20 ml solvents processed for 10 min > Concentration of tannin for 10 ml solvents processed for 20 min> Concentration of tannin for 10 ml solvents processed for 10 min.

Keywords: Extraction, Plantago ovata, Solvent recovery, Tannic acid.
