ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTICOAGULANT ACTIVITY IN AMARANTHUS GANGETICUS L. AQUEOUS LEAF EXTRACT

ABSTRACT
Antioxidants are molecules which can reduce the effect of free radicals and offer protection against cancer and degenerative disorders. Synthetic antioxidants are widely used as food preservatives which can have deletrious effects. Antioxidants and anticoagulant activity in Amaranthus gangeticus leaf was studied using aqueous extract. Amaranthus gangeticus contained total phenols (58μg/ml),total flavonoids (49mg/ml),ferric ion reducing activity (82μg/ml) and anticoagulant activity (54%).The secondary antioxidants such as ion chelating, superoxide anion activity were also evident. Since Amaranthus gangeticus leaves contains rich flavonoids, it is suggested that regular intake of this will help in avoiding heart diseases and other ailments.
