ABSTRACT
The main object of present work was to develop of cefixime lozenge for the treatment of throat infection to provide local action and improve patient compliance. Lozenge formulation of cefixime was developed in order to reduce the side effect associated with systemic route. The lozenges were prepared by heating and congealing method using gelatin base (gelatin, propylene glycol and glycerin). All the prepared formulations were characterized for drug content, thickness, diameter, weight variation, moisture content, in-vitro dissolution by pharmaceutical standard method and taste masking on human volunteers. The selected formulation was having good transparency and pourability with disintegration time, in vitro drug release 93.07 % in anti microbial activity study showed that the prepared formulation does not hamper the anti microbial activity of cefixime. Accelerated stability study conducted as per ICH guidelines at 45 ºC and 75% relative humidity over a period of one month found that there wasn’t any substantial interaction between the drugs, flavour and colour and the prepared formulation were stable. Development lozenge formulation was beneficial because it was used for local throat infection. So, local delivery was applied to treat bacterial infection.
