Abstract

ANTIMICROBIAL SUSCEPTIBILITY OF PROTEUS VULGARIS ISOLATED FROM SICK LAYER CHICKENS INFECTED WITH ARTHRITIS IN AJMER REGION OF RAJASTHAN.

ABSTRACT

In order to asses susceptibility of Proteus vulgaris to 24 antimicrobial drugs, we tested six P. vulgaris isolates, recovered from layers with clinical signs and lesions of arthritis in the Ajmer region of Rajsthan, India. A total of 24 liver tissue samples were aseptically collected from 12 fowls of 4 selected poultry farms of Ajmer suspected for arthritis and subjected to bacteriology and biochemical examination. Antibiograms revealed a high level of resistance to tetracycline (100%), amikacin (100%) and carbenicillin (50%). None of the strains was found resistant to gentamicin. All isolates were susceptible to ampicillin, amoxy clav, aztreonam, cefepime, cefoperazone – sulbactum, cefopodoxime, ceftazidime – clav, ceftriaxone, cefazolin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, cotrimoxazole, cefoxitin, gentamicin, imipenem, netilmicin, ofloxacin, piperacillin and tobramycin. Multidrug resistance to 2 or more antibacterial agents was observed for 100% of the species tested i.e. P. vulgaris. 100% of the isolates were resistant to at least 2 antibiotics and 50% were resistant to at least 3 antibiotics. The Multiple Antibiotic Resistance (MAR) index of P. vulgaris was found to be 0.34. Chickens with arthritis at slaughter should always be totally condemned because of the public health hazard from the organisms most often associated with this condition.
