ANTI-SMOKING CHEWING GUM –A FUTURE’S NOVAL TECHNIQUE

ABSTRACT
Chewing gum is one of the very popular oral confectionary products. It
is a potentially useful means of administering drugs either locally or
systematically via, the oral cavity. The medicated chewing gum (antismoking
chewing gum) has through the recent years gained increasing
acceptance as a drug delivery system. The use of the chewing gums is
also suggested for other disorders like the gingivitis, plaque, flow of
saliva, as a mouth freshener and prescribed mostly by dental
physicians. It is having a wider acceptability with the patients and that
is why its popularity is increasing. From 3,000years the smoking habit
has been the favorite pass time of people from different civilizations.
People still posses this habit and the intake of NICOTINE is increasing in different forms like
the cigarette, pure tobacco and cigar. Due to the increasing intake of tobacco, there is need
for the development of the novel drug delivery systems for the smoking cessation. This
review tries to explain the chewing gum as a dosage form and ASTS, also popularly known
as the nicotine replacement therapy, considering the application of the gum to it and its other
components which may be great help in future for smoking cessation.
