Abstract

ASSESSMENT OF MEDICAL STUDENTS COMPARING THE OBJECTIVE STRUCTURED CLINICAL EXAMINATION (OSCE) USING THE MODIFIED BORDERLINE GROUP METHOD (MBGM) AND THE TRADITIONAL LONG OBSTETRIC CASE (LOC)

ABSTRACT

Background: Medical schools worldwide used to assess their students in the final clinical examination in obstetrics and gynaecology by the (LOC).To overcome the drawbacks of (LOC), a big shift has occurred in medical education after the introduction of the (OSCE). The objectives of this study were to compare the students’ performance in the final clinical examination in obstetrics and gynaecology (MBBS) by the (OSCE) using (MBGM) as standard setting method and the (LOC); and to compare the feasibility between the two methods. Methods: One hundred and three students were examined by the (OSCE) in 10 stations, the cut score was determined by the (MBGM). Also a fixed cut score for this (OSCE) examination was taken as 50%. On the other hand, we took the performance of 103 students who were examined by the (LOC) in the previous batch. (Cut score was taken as 50%). Results: There was no significant difference in the No. of students who passed/failed the exam by (MBGM) and the (LOC), the (LOC) and the fixed (50%) cut score of the (OSCE). The skills tested in the (OSCE) were 3 times the (LOC), the examiner-student exposure time was more than 2 times the (LOC), the (OSCE) was feasible with regard to the No. of days, No. of examiners, No. of patients/simulated patients and the No. of the auxiliary staff facilitated the exam. Incentives were found to be more in the (OSCE). Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the performance of the students between the (OSCE) and the (LOC). The (OSCE) has obvious advantages over the (LOC).
