ABSTRACT

Diabetes continues to shorten life of people and investigation of its consequences is important task for the society. It is known that obesity is among the most common risk factors for many of diabetes-related vascular impairments and enhances the chance of developing cardiovascular diseases and the risk of death. The aim of the study is to evaluate the relationships between BMI, age and the duration of diabetes in patients with diabetes type I and type II in Bulgaria treated with insulin. The investigation included cohort of 433 patients with type I diabetes (n=178) and type II diabetes (n=255) from Bulgaria. People were separated in groups depending on the type of diabetes and into subgroups depending on their age and BMI. It was obtained that the prevalence of men in diabetes cohort is valid for patients with type I only. The differences in duration of genders of diabetes type I and II is not statistically significant up to 50 years for both type of diabetes. The average BMI is in range 22-27 for D1 and 29-31 for D2. It is accepted that usually there is the prevalence of men in diabetes cohort but in presented study, such prevalence is valid for patients with type I only. The differences in durability of diabetes type I and II is not statistically significant according to gender up to 50 years for both type of diabetes. The BMI is an important indicator for the control of diabetes. The data showed that the BMI and durability of diabetes are mutually dependent. The type 2 diabetic patients are more obese than the type 1 diabetics in our study.

Keywords: diabetes, insulin, BMI, durability of diabetes.
