ABSTRACT Plant has been a source of number of chemical identity with pharmacological values. Many plants from developing countries are not explored yet for their pharmacological values. The Nyctanthes arbor-tristis is a plant found in hilly region of Nepal. It is a legendary plant, used as hepatoprotective, anti diabetic, rheumatic joint pain, expectorants and as a laxative by different communities of Nepal. The present study focuses on the study of anti-microbial and anti-diabetic activity of ethanolic extract of N. arbor-tristis. The aerial stem and leaves of the plant were subjected first hexane extraction to remove fats then subjected to the ethanol extraction using soxhlet method. The extract was subjected to Antimicrobial sensitivity test (by Cup diffusion method) and anti-diabetic activity in rats. Statistical differences were evaluated by paired t test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Post hoc Tukey tests, Benferroni test and p value of < 0.05 was considered to be significant. The data were expressed as mean [95% confidence interval for mean]. The antimicrobial activity was found to be significant to a Gram positive organism S. aureus and sensitive to one isolated MRSA and Gram negative organism S. Typhi. The ethanol extract and glipizide provoked a significant fall in the blood sugar level in normoglycemic and glucose loaded rats. The study revealed that the plant possessed medicinal values from which lead molecule can be generating for development of newer drugs. However, to reach conclusive decision detail study for characterization, isolation, purification and identification of compound and biological studies with exact mechanism of action responsible for the particular biological activity is necessary. Keywords: anti-diabetic, antimicrobial, ethanolic extract, N. arbor-tristis. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
