ABSTRACT
Four hundred and seventy eight (478) individuals, who exhibited some
manifestations of chronic and debilitating illnesses including persistent
cough, skin cancer and dermatitis, multiple lymph adenitis, diarrhoea
and enteritis, genital sore, urethritis, vaginitis and weight loss were
examined to establish some peculiar characteristics of some
haematological parameters viz: Hb and ESR with HIV positive and
negative individuals. HIV negative individuals were found to have
higher mean haemoglobin concentrations 12.14 gl/dl or 82.6% than
HIV positive individuals that recorded lower Hb concentrations of
8.21gl/dl or 55.8%. HIV negative individuals had lower mean ESR
29mm per hour than HIV positive individuals with 108mm per hour.
The results generally indicated that HIV positive individuals in Onitsha
metropolis, Anambra State, Nigeria that were yet to receive antiretroviral
recorded low haemoglobin and high erythrocyte
sedimentation rate counts.
