Abstract

EVALUATION OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RENAL ABNORMALITIES AND DYSLIPIDAEMIA ON TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

M.Saranya and T.Nithiya*

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by some specific complications including diabetic nephropathy and dyslipidaemia. This study was designed to find out the correlation between renal abnormalities and dyslipidaemia on type 2 diabetes mellitus. Serum creatinine, urea and lipid profiles are useful clinical tools in assessing renal function and dyslipidaemia. Serum glucose, Hb, creatinine, urea and lipid profiles were determined in type 2 diabetic patients attending Government Hospital, Mayiladuthurai, Tamilnadu, India. About 60(30 diabetic and 30 non - diabetic patients) aged between 40-70 years were used for the study. There are significant increase in urea, creatinine, glucose and lipid profile except Hb, HDL cholesterol which is decreased, has been found in all groups as compared to controls. Other finding observed was that the level of lipid profiles and renal markers increased as per the increase in concentration of blood glucose. High levels of total cholesterol appear due to increased cholesterol synthesis. The triglycerides levels changes according to the glycaemic control. The increase may be due to overproduction of VLDL- TG.

Keywords: Serum glucose, urea, Hb, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol, triglycerides.
