PHARMACOGNOSTICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL REVIEW ON AYURVEDIC PLANT ANKOLAH-[Alangium salvifolium (Linn. F) Wang. (Alangiaceae)]

ABSTRACT
Alangium salviifolium (Linn. F) Wang. is commonly known as
Ankolah, a well known medicinal plant in Ayurveda. It is a small tree
found over the plains and foothills throughout India. In Ayurveda the
roots and the fruits of this plant are used for the treatment of
rheumatism and haemorrhoid. Externally it is used for the treatment of
bites by rabbits, rats and dogs. The plant is also popular in folk
medicine and has been studied for its anti-inflammatory, antifertility
and cardiotonic etc activities. Its dried seeds have traditionally been
used to treat various ailments. Present study aimed to document the all
available data regarding the Pharmacognostical and Phytochemical
study of this important medicinal plant. Various text books and related
information from internet were collected and analysed here. Review
suggests that still various area of action of this plant yet to be explored to justify its
traditional uses.
