Sanketkumar D. Bariya*, Jay B. Jain, Jinita R. Kapadia, Girish K. Jani, Vipul D. Prajapati

ABSTRACT

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic disease characterized by chronic inflammation of gastrointestinal tract especially involving colon. The two main components of IBD are Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s Disease (CD). Colon is a site where both local and systemic delivery of drug can be targeted. Systemic side effects can be minimized by targeting the drug to colon and thereby making it more effective delivery system. The therapy of IBD includes administration of anti inflammatory agents, corticosteroids, biological agents, immunosuppressive drugs and some antibiotics, which repress the intestinal inflammatory burden and improve the symptoms. The present work gives an overview on the different routes of administration of drug in delivery systems. It also briefly covers the strategies for drug delivery in the treatment of IBD. Novel drug delivery approach is known to be more effective system as compared to conventional drug delivery systems owing to its lesser adverse effects and accurate targeting of drug. The article also highlights the patents on IBD.

Keywords: IBD, Chron’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, Colon, Targeted drug delivery system.
