Abstract

RUPTURE UTERUS IN SUDANESE WOMEN: MANAGEMENT AND MATERNAL COMPLICATIONS

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Uterine rupture is an emergency and catastrophic obstetric complication which is associated with high maternal mortality, especially in developing countries. The objectives of this study were to determine the incidence, maternal complications and management of rupture uterus in Sudanese women. Methods: A descriptive study conducted in Omdurman Maternity Hospital, Sudan. The study population was pregnant women presented to the hospital with ruptured uterusduring2010. Data were collected by a questionnaire and a check list. Analysis was done by SPSS version 16. Results: The incidence rate of rupture uterus was 11:10,000 deliveries.Most of the patients (63.6%) with rupture uterus were under the age group 25-34 years. The mean gestational age was 38 weeks. Most of the patients (69.7%) were managed by uterine repair. The most common maternal complication of a rupture uterus was severe haemorrhage constituted 81.8%. Conclusions: The incidence of rupture uterus among Sudanese women was 11:10,000 deliveries. Most patients were managed by uterine repair and severe haemorrhage was the most common complication.
