ABSTRACT
In recent year’s trend towards authentication, standardization and quality assurance of selected medicinal plants has been rapid increase for potential therapeutic significance. Despite the modern techniques, identification of plant drug by pharmacognostic study is more reliable. In present investigation, the detailed pharmacognostic study of Musa paradisiaca L. [bract, flower, trachea (floral stalk) and tracheal fluid (floral stalk fluid)] was carried out. However, no conclusive pharmacognostic study of its bract, flower, trachea and tracheal fluid has been performed yet. The study includes macroscopic, microscopic, preliminary phytochemical screening and fluorescence analysis. The macroscopic and microscopic evaluation revealed characters that are of diagnostic value and useful in authentication of the plant. Phytochemical screening for detection of secondary metabolites such as saponins, terpenes, steroids, flavonoids, resins, alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, lignin and fixed oil along with primary metabolites protein, amino acids, fats and carbohydrates in various parts of plant. The fluorescence analysis under visible light and UV light by treatment with different chemical reagents showed different color changes. Information obtained from these studies will assist for sample identification, standardization for quality, purity, efficacy, pharmacological, therapeutic evaluation and also towards the development of plant monograph as food cum drug agent.
