ESSENTIAL OIL CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF ALPINIA OFFICINARUM RHIZOMES FROM WEST BENGAL

ABSTRACT This study describes the composition of the volatile oil of Alpinia Officinarum rhizomes of West Bengal. The essential has been obtained by the process of steam distillation. 73 components were identified by mass spectrometry. Identified molecules comprise 93.6% of the total oil. The major components are 1,8-cineole (44.85%), alpha terpineol (7.42%), beta pinene (5.04%) and gamma cadinene (3.86%). This study reveals a 1,8-cineole content of 2505mg/kg of West Bengal Alpinia Officinarum rhizomes. Keywords: Alpinia Officinarum rhizomes, terpineol, spectrometry.
