ABSTRACT
The detergent formulations used in the present century generally
consist of surface-active agents, builders, co-builders, bleaching
agents, and some specific additives used for effective cleaning
benefits. Enzymes are widely researched in detergents as a principal
component since they are stable at high pH and temperature and
remove the hard stains of proteins and lipids as they convert the
complex stains into smaller and easily water-soluble fragments. Recent
developments in the advent of natural polymer based detergents have
led to a cutting edge research in the detergent industry. Specialty
polymers for different detergent formulations are reviewed in the
article. Emphasis these days is on the natural polymer based detergents
over traditional synthetic ones with respect to their better cleaning
properties, improved performance, lowering of washing temperatures
and the alleviation of pollution.
