ABSTRACT

Ethnobotanically, the fruit of plant Momordica dioica (family – Cucurbitaceae) has been reported to be used in the treatment of various disorders including stomach and skin diseases. Antiulcer activity of the 50% ethanolic extracts in order to validate ethnobotanical claims regarding the plant use in the above disorders. Gastroprotective potential of Momordica dioica fruits extract (200 and 400 mg/kg body weight) was studied on Pylorus ligation, Ethanol induced, aspirin induced and cold-resistant stress-induced ulcers. Content of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalyse along with lipid peroxidation (LPO) was also studied in cold resistantinduced ulcers. The results of the present study showed that the fruits extract possessed gastroprotective activity as evidenced by its significant inhibition in the formation of ulcers induced by physical and chemical agents with a maximum of 87.15% curation (400 mg/kg body weight) in cold resistant stress-induced ulcers. Fruits extract decreased LPO and SOD with concomitant increase in catalyse activity in cold resistant stress-induced ulcers. Moderate antibacterial activity and antifungal activity was also observed. These findings could justify, at least partially, the inclusion of this plant in the management of gastric disorders in traditional medicine.

Keywords: Momordica dioica, CRS induced, Acidity, Ulcer index.
