FORMULATION & EVALUATION OF FLOATING TABLET OF VENLAFAXINE

Kundan Singh Sengar*, A K Pathak and Mukul Tailang

ABSTRACT

The study aimed for Formulation development of floating tablet of venlafaxine Hydrochloride. Floating tablets is new era for successful development of controlled release formulation along with various features to provide successful drug delivery system. The purpose of the present investigation is to formulate floating tablets of Venlafaxine HCl, a novel antidepressant by direct compression technique using microcrystalline cellulose, HPMC, Sodiumbicarbonate. The drug-excipients interaction was ruled out through FTIR studies. The prepared batches were evaluated for organoleptic properties, hardness, friability, weight variation, parameters, buoyancy time, floating lag time and in- vitro dissolution study and stability. The drug content of all the formulations was within the acceptable limits of the British Pharmacopoeia. The release profile and drug content were remained unchanged after 1 month storage of tablets at 40 ± 2oC and 75 ± 5% RH. In vitro dissolution study was carried out in pH 1.2 buffer. The in vitro drug release of optimised formulation followed Higuchi kinetics and the drug release mechanism was found to be non-fickian type.

Keywords: Venlafaxine hydrochloride; Direct compression; floating tablet; Stability studies.
