PHARMACOLOGICAL POTENTIAL OF LACTUCA RUNCINATA DC: A REVIEW

ABSTRACT
Lactuca runcinata DC commonly known as Undirachakam or Atheli. It is an annual erect herb belonging to the family Compositae (Asteraceae). Lactuca runcinata has great medicinal and religious significance. Traditionally this plant finds its wide applicability as Diuretic and chronic obstruction of liver and bowel. The Lactuca runcinata DC contains different phytoconstituents like Alkaloids, Cardiac glycosides, Flavanoids, Phenols, phlobatannin, Reducing sugars, Saponins, steroids, Tannins, Terpenoids, Volatile oils, Carbohydrates, Amino acids. The entire herb of Lactuca runcinata contains various components which were detected by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The plant having
different pharmacological activities such Antibacterial, Cardiotonic, Anticancer or Cytotoxic, Anthelmintic, Anti-inflammatory, Hepatoprotective, Antihistaminic, Analgesic, Anti-diabetic, Antioxidant, Antitumor, Diuretic, Fungicide etc. The present review article was aimed to provide up-to-date information on pharmacological properties of the Lactuca runcinata. The established results of different studies showed that Lactuca runcinata DC can play an important role in the invention of new and effective medicinal agent. So, it is recommended as a plant of phytopharmaceutical importance due to presence of various phytocomponents.
