ABSTRACT
anthelmintica (L.) Willd. is a potential medicinal plant and the seeds were used for many human ailments in the Ayurveda, an Indian system of medicine. Ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts obtained from V. antihelminca (VA) seeds were evaluated for phytochemical and antimicrobial activity. The phytochemical screening of the tested extracts showed positive reactions towards the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, coumarins and steroids. Antimicrobial study revealed that, the ethyl acetate extract exhibited strong and concentration dependent activity against the gram negative bacteria E. coli and Klebsiella pneumonia. Ethanol extract exhibited faint activity against all the test
pathogens at 250 and 500 μg/disc. In conclusion, V. anthelminca seed extracts showed positive therapeutic effects against human pathogenic organisms and is a good source of natural antibiotics.
