Kamble Arati Prabhakar*, Karad D.D. and Kulkarni S.W.

ABSTRACT

The Streptomyces are prolific group of actinomycetes and can produce many antibiotics and other class of biologically active secondary metabolites. Curcuma longa L. is one of important medicinal plant. The present research focus on pesticide resistant and antimicrobial activity of some Streptomyces isolated from soil under cultivation of Curcuma longa L. Total four rhizospheric soil samples under cultivation Curcuma longa L. were collected from the villages around Barshi Dist- Solapur. Ten isolates were identified as Streptomyces with the help of MS IS software. Total ten Streptomyces isolates were tested for their pesticide resistant ability to grow in presence of pesticide such as Confidor, Carbaryl, Follidol and Diethane M- 45 on Glycerol aspargine agar containing these pesticides separately by spot inoculation technique after incubation at an ambient temperature for 5 to 7 days. Antimicrobial activities of actinomycetes were tested against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas axonopodis by primary screening and agar overlay technique. All Streptomyces were resistant to conidifor and follidol, total 80% actinomycetes were resistant to carbaryl and diethane. Three Streptomyces isolate showed antibacterial activity against all tested pathogen. Streptomyces having broad spectrum antibacterial activity were further selected for secondary screening. 90% Streptomyces isolates showed antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, 80% against Escherichia coli, 70% against Xanthomonas axonopodis and 60% against Pseudomonas. Streptomyces resistant to tested pesticides used for to degrade pesticides and may be used to control soil and water pollution caused by pesticide. Streptomyces having broad spectrum antibacterial activity can be used to prevent diseases caused by these tested pathogens to some extent.
