ABSTRACT
Detergent is a persistent environmental contaminant probably due to its use in the formulation of cleaning agents, pesticides and for dispersing oil spills at seas; so the use, production and exposure, of detergents is unavoidable. To get an idea about the nature of effect of detergent Rin on the biochemical aspects of aquatic organisms. Fishes belonging to the species Lepidocephalichthyes thermalis were exposed to sublethal concentration of 4 mg/L for long term duration. Biochemical characteristics like glycogen, protein and cholesterol were estimated in liver, kidney, gills and muscles. The decrease of biochemical constituents from the control were noted. The results are statistically analysed and most values were found to be significant. Detergent effluent is highly toxic to the environment therefore, an indiscriminate
discharge of this effluent to the surrounding should be discouraged. This study concludes that both the detergents, even at safe doses, are quite potent to manifest physio-metabolic crisis in the fish and that each of the above biochemical indices may be used as bio indicator of detergent toxicity in fish.
