ABSTRACT

The present study was aimed to prepare and characterize gel formulations of mephenesin using different polymers as gelling agents, permeation enhancers like propylene glycol and dimethyl sulfoxide(5- 15%) in various concentrationsin (5-15%) and also to evaluate antiinflammtory actvivty of gel. For the study, polymers such as carbopol 934 (1.5%w/v), hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (6 %w/v) were selected for preparation of different gel formulations. The prepared gels were evaluated for drug content, physical appearance, pH, extrudability, spreadability, skin irritation to observe toxicity or side effects and also for anti inflammatory acivity. It was inferred from the results that gel formulation M3 prepared by carbopol 934(1.5%w/v)and DMSO in the range of 10% were found to be best formulations among the prepared batches. The prepared gels were evaluated for anti inflammator activity in wistar rat model and crbapol 934 formulation of Mephenesin gel shown significant inhibition in carrageenan induced paw oedema.

Keywords: Mephenesin, Gel, Carbopol, HPMC, Abdominal skin, Anti‐inflammatory. Paw Oedema.
