ABSTRACT
Amaranthus spinosus Linn. (Amaranthaceae), commonly known as „„Mulluharivesoppu‟‟in Kannada, It is used in the Indian traditional system of medicine for the treatment of diabetes. The present study was carried out to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Amaranthus spinosus L. Phytochemical investigations of their extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides, cardiac glycosides, anthraquinones, tannins and saponins. The study scientifically validates the use of plant in traditional medicine. Antibacterial activity of leaf extract of Amaranthus spinosus.l was studied using ethanol extract against bacterial strains like bacillus subtilis, S. Epidermis, E.coli and Proteus.sp. The anti-bacterial activity was determined by disc diffusion method.
