SCREENING FOR THE ELITE GENOTYPE OF CALOPHYLLUM INOPHYLLUM L. BASED ON ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND CALOCOUMARIN-A CONTENT
Steena Roshan Sebastian* and A. John De Britto
ABSTRACT
Calophyllum inophyllum, an associated mangrove species has several
medicinal properties and potent antioxidant activity. C. inophyllum
collected from different accessions along the east coast Tamilnadu was
screened for choosing the elite genotype containing more active
compound, thereby showing efficient antioxidant activity. Antioxidant
activity was analysed by total flavonoid and phenol content, DPPH and
hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging activity and reducing power
activity. CalocoumarinA, the active compound present in the
methanolic leaf extracts of the samples was quantified by comparing
the standard chromatogram of calocoumarinA obtained through High
Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The C. inophyllum
belonging to Pitchavaram accession recorded maximum content of
calocoumarinA and possessed highest antioxidant activity.
Keywords: Calophyllum inophyllum, flavonoid, phenol, DPPH, hydrogen peroxide, reducing power, HPLC.
