Abstract

STUDY OF DRUG UTILIZATION PATTERN IN THE GYNECOLOGY OPD OF A TERTIARY CARE CENTRE

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Drugs used in gynecology are one of the top selling drugs in India; however they are least studied with respect to drug utilization. Thus, present study was undertaken to analyse drug utilization pattern of gynecology OPD in a tertiary care hospital. Duration of Study: 2 months, 1 st may, 2014 to 25th July, 2014, Objective: To document the utilization profile of various drugs used in the gynecology OPD of a tertiary care hospital. Methodology: It was a prospective observational study of the prescriptions of patients coming to the gynecology OPD during the study period. Prescription records were screened as per inclusion and exclusion criteria and 300 prescriptions were randomly selected. Observations: Total 300 patients were analysed; 85 were infective cases and 215 were non infective cases. In infective group Vaginal discharge and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease were most common. In noninfective group, menstrual disorders were most common specially Dysmenorrhea and Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding. Among all drugs, Minerals (iron, folic acid, calcium) were most commonly prescribed followed by Hormones, Antimicrobials, NSAIDs, Antihistaminics, Vitamins, Miscellaneous group in the decreasing order. Discussion: The drugs utilized in our study correlates with the pattern of various gynaecological diseases observed. There are very few drug utilization studies done in the gynecology department. Majority focus on the obstetric cases. Results: Minerals (30%) most commonly prescribed, second most common Hormones (24.83%), third most common Antimicrobials (13.37%). Polypharmacy was observed in (96.33%) prescriptions. Conclusion: It is only by drug utilization studies that burden of diseases and corresponding utlilization of drugs in gynecology can be measured.
