AN OVERVIEW OF BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF PYRIMIDINES
Rakesh Singh*, Dr. Anuja Chouhan
ABSTRACT
Pyrimidine nucleus is one of the most important heterocycles
exhibiting remarkable pharmacological activities.. Pyrimidine is a
heterocyclic aromatic organic compound containing two nitrogen
atoms at positions 1 and 3 of the six-membered ring which shows wide
range of biological activities. Numerous methods for the synthesis of
pyrimidine and also their diverse reactions offer enormous scope in the
field of medicinal chemistry. Condensed pyrimidine derivatives have
been reported as anti-microbial, analgesic, anti-viral, antiinflammatory, anti- HIV, anti-tubercular, anti-tumor, anti-neoplastic,
anti-malaria, diuretic, cardiovascular agents and hypnotic drugs for the
nervous system, calcium-sensing receptor antagonists and also for antagonists of the human
A2A adenosine receptor. etc. The present review provides a broad view of the biological and
medicinal activity possessed by compounds having pyrimidine nucleus.
Keywords: Pyrimidine, biological activities, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory etc.
