ABSTRACT
Plants and plant derived agents have long history as source of potential
chemotherapeutic agents in Ayurvedic and Unani system of medicine.
The present study has been aimed to study the HIV (Reverse
Transcriptase) and HBV (Surface antigen and DNA polymerase by
Andrographic paniculata. The plant extract of the Andrographic
paniculata has positive inhibitory effect on ethanol.methanol and
aqueous extracts of a Andrographic paniculata showed positive
inhibition against HIV-RT,HBsAg and HBV DNA Polymerase
whereas petroleum ether, hexane and chloroform extracts did not
inhibit both HIV and HBV . This is probably the first authentic
scientific antiviral report from South India on Andrographic
paniculata.Further investigations on the phytochemical of the compounds and the structure elucidation is imperative to confirm the same.
Keywords: Andrographic paniculata; Immunomodulation; HBV DNA Polymerase; Cytokine.
